Luke: Christ the Lord

Pastor Mark Driscoll examines Luke 2, one of the most familiar passages of Scripture, where an angel announces the birth of Jesus, “Christ the Lord,” to shepherds in a field. The angel reveals how we are to see Jesus. We are not to insert him into a false ideology, such as atheism, deism, pantheism or panentheism, or theism; these offer no hope, no good news, and no savior. Rather, we are to praise Jesus as the Savior, Christ the Lord—good news for all the people—like the angels, Mary, and the shepherds did.

Luke: The Birth Of Jesus Christ

Pastor Mark Driscoll examines the birth of Jesus from Luke 2 in light of four categories: the historical (what God said and did), the theological (what that means), the biographical (how that changes us), and the doxological (how we worship). He answers seven common questions about the incarnation of Jesus Christ (that is, when God became flesh and entered into human history) and shares how we can have comfort and encouragement because Jesus is like us, Jesus is unlike us, and he came to make us like him.

Luke: The Birth of John the Baptizer

Besides Jesus, John the Baptizer was the greatest man to ever live. We can learn from seven aspects of his greatness—including that he was a Spirit-filled evangelist who humbly prepared the way for Jesus. He avoided adolescence and thus is a great example of what it means to be a real man. Real men are creators and cultivators, not childish consumers, cowards, or complainers.

Luke: Mary's Song

Mary sings a song of praise to God, and in it lists at least 17 attributes of God and echoes a multitude of Old Testament Scriptures—even though she was likely illiterate. From her song, we are encouraged to replace worrying and coveting with worshiping, and replace anxiety with history. Even though Mary has plenty to worry about, she worships God because God has “done great things for [her].”

Luke: Mary and Elizabeth

Pregnant Mary walks many miles to visit pregnant Elizabeth so they can share in each other’s joy and be in community together. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb, John the Baptizer, leaps for joy when he hears Mary’s greeting, and Elizabeth prophesies that Mary is blessed. Thus, we see that a baby in the womb is indeed a baby, that children are a blessing from God, and that abortion is murder. We all, through sin, have bloody hands as murderers of Jesus, but he offers his nail-scarred hands—life for life—to save us. He died in our place for our sin, and the proper response is faith and worship, as exemplified by Mary, Elizabeth, and John.

Happy Birthday Mars Hill: Special 13th Anniversary

In conjunction with the Luke series, this special sermon, filmed on the real Mars Hill in Athens, aired at all campuses on October 11, 2009, the thirteenth anniversary of Mars Hill Church. Pastor Mark preaches from Acts 17:16–34, where Paul addresses the men of Athens, contextualizing and contending for the gospel of Jesus Christ and striking at the heart of their rampant idolatry, which in many ways is mirrored by our own culture today.

Luke: Jesus' Birth Prophesied

This week we meet Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was a teenager from a small town; a virgin, pledged to be married to Joseph. The angel Gabriel showed up and told Mary that she found favor, or grace, with God. She would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, for nothing is impossible with God. Mary responded in faith, “I am the servant of the Lord,” and thus is our great example of faith.

Luke: John the Baptizer's Birth Prophesied

John the Baptizer’s birth was prophesied in Malachi 3:1; 4:5–6. Then, after 400 years of silence, during the time of Herod “the great,” in the city of Jerusalem, at the Temple, we meet Zechariah, a priest, and his wife, Elizabeth. They were old, barren, poor, and righteous. Zechariah wasn’t a big deal; he was no one from nowhere doing, in the sight of the world, nothing. He was finally picked to go inside the Temple and burn incense, representing our prayers to God. While inside, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and told him that his prayer was answered and he would have a son who would be great. The baby, John (meaning “God is gracious”), is named by God and filled with the Spirit from his mother’s womb. But Zechariah did not believe the angel, so he was made mute. The couple returned home, Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she stayed home, praising God for taking away her reproach, or shame and disgrace, among the people.

We are all worshipers we either worship God and enjoy him, or we worship the things he’s created—this is idolatry. Most people don’t realize that they worship things like cars, clothes, kids, sports, hobbies, and houses—but they do. They make sacrifices for them and find their identity in them. This sermon helps remind us all that besides Jesus, everything else is kindling.

Trial: Perseverance Until Judgment

Perseverance makes the last day the most important day. If you love Jesus, read the Bible, and live a life that is obedient to Scripture out of love for him, scoffers will come. Ultimately Christianity hinges on the fact that Jesus lived, died, rose and is coming again and fear of hell does not compel us to persevere as much as the hope of God’s Kingdom.

In warning Christians against false teachers, Peter notes that they are often bold.
Pray Like Jesus: The High Priestly Prayer Pt. 2

In John 17 we find Jesus praying that his people would find joy in the Spirit, mission to do His work, and unity to show His glory. This is a sermon that breaks down the petty differences that we focus on, and refocuses us on the all consuming glory of Christ. If we all look toward Christ for our lives—we will get joy, be compelled to mission, and be unified through our common passion.

With the cross approaching, Jesus pauses in John 17 to pray his longest prayer in all of the Scriptures. Therein, we are privileged to listen to the inner dialogue of the Trinity as God the Son speaks to God the Father. This prayer is packed with deep theological and practical implications, such as faithfulness in trial, God’s goodness, the World, the elect, joy, and much more.

We are all involved in a spiritual battle between God and Satan. Christians need to know the schemes Satan uses to deceive us from the truth just as Eve was deceived in the Garden of Eden. Pastor Mark Driscoll teaches on these things in the second installment of Spiritual Warfare.

Pray Like Jesus: The Gethsemane Prayer

When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was at the hardest point of his earthly life. In anguish, pain, and desperation we see God the Son pray to God the Father asking that God would take away the suffering he was about to experience, and ended his prayer with an essential phrase that every Christian must understand‚ “not my will, but yours, be done”. We can pray and ask our Father for the things we desire, but at the end of the day we must understand that His will is what’s best for our joy and His glory.

God is our Father. He’s our Dad. One thing that separates Christians from other religions is the fact that we believe God to be a loving Dad who we can pray to anytime and anywhere. Jesus talks about how we should pray with the Lord’s prayer, which Pastor Mark teaches us about in this sermon.

Everyone is a worshiper. We all have people or things that we love, sacrifice for, and are our number one affection. The main question each person should answer is this—Do you worship created things, or the Creator?

God deserves to be worshiped. He created everyone and everything. Our place as the creation is to worship our Creator. Pastor Mark Driscoll investigates the many idols that we are completely oblivious too, and shows that every problem in life is, at its core, a worship problem.

Special: Spontaneous Baptisms

Baptism is a sacrament of the Christian faith that symbolizes Jesus’s death and resurrection. The submersion under water is a Christian’s death to sin and the emerging is the resurrection to new life with Jesus. On Easter Sunday 2008 the Mars Hill Church Ballard campus spontaneously baptized over 120 people as part of the 5 Easter services. We share this music video from our 11 AM service. All the baptisms can be found at marshillchurch.org.

Special: Continuous Worship

When we speak of “worship” most people associate the word with gatherings of spiritual people in sacred places. In modern church circles worship has become identified almost exclusively with music performed and sung in church services. When we look to scripture we see that this is a tragic reduction of the biblical idea of worship which spans from Genesis to Revelation and encompasses all of life. Worship is the continuous outpouring of all humanity for better or for worse; for God glorifying worship or self glorifying idolatry. Before we can establish practical, God glorifying corporate worship in our churches we must first think biblically about the larger theological context of this defining issue. If we fail to do this we create an idol out of the very thing we are intending glorify God.

Pastor Tim Smith speaks about the larger context of worship and how it relates to the world around us in culture. This message came from the Resurgence: Continuous Worship conference fall 2007. For more information about Pastor Tim and both worship and culture check out http://www.doxologist.com.

Religion Saves and 9 Other Misconceptions - Regulative Principle

How do we decide the best way to worship corporately? Do we rely on tradition or cultural innovations like sitting down and reading by electric light? Most importantly, what does the Bible have to say on the matter? Pastor Mark Driscoll finishes out our sermon series, Religion Saves and 9 Other Misconceptions by answering the question, "do you believe that the Scripture not only regulates our theology but also our methodology? In other words, do you believe in the regulative principle? If so, to what degree? If not, why not?"

There are lots of different churches out there. One of the newer types is called "emerging", which really just means that they're into "conversations" and, sometimes, wacky theology. Pastor Mark Driscoll addresses the topic of the 'emerging church' in his sermon answering the question, "What can traditional/established churches learn from "emerging" churches?"

Genesis 2 says it's not good for a man to be alone, that he needs a wife to help him out. However, the Bible doesn't lay out a specific way that is to be done. There different ways to go about getting a spouse, not all of which are biblically acceptable. Pastor Mark Driscoll answers the question, "how does a Christian date righteously; and what are the physical, emotional, and mentally connecting boundaries a Christian must set while developing an intimate relationship prior to marriage?" in the 7th week of Religion Saves and 9 Other Misconceptions.

What saves us? Do we need to do good work to justify ourselves before God or does Jesus justify us to good works? That is the question that literally split the Catholic church during the Protestant reformation, and the one poised before Pastor Mark Driscoll as he continues the series Religion Saves and 9 Other Misconceptions by answering, "If salvation is by faith alone (Romans 3:28), then why are there so many verses that say or imply the opposite, namely that salvation is by works (James 2:24, Matthew 6:15 & 7:21, Galatians 5:19-21)?"
